Well, another Monday is coming to a close. I find Monday's to be the hardest day of the week because the memories of the weekend are so fresh in your mind; especially after a wonderful three day weekend! Normally getting out of town or driving somewhere close by are perfect things to do on a three day weekend. This one though, we decided to stay at home and enjoy NOT having to pack up and go anywhere, or get in the car for a drive, or leave the pooch behind.
Yesterday we ventured outside of our domestic cocoon and went to
Great Falls Park. It is a National Park really close to us, probably a 20 - 25 minute driving with traffic. We have heard a lot about it, but just haven't ever gotten around to going. And seeing as how we are
National Parks Passport owners - we need to make the trip and get our cancellations (yes - we know that we are dorks, but, well... we love it!)
I kept asking out loud while we where there "Why haven't we come before" - to which Adam would always respond "I know, right?"
I didn't really understand why it was called Great Falls, but then we got to overlook #1:
Then it all fell into place :) Not only were there views like this (and trust me, we got lots of pictures) it was a really well taken care of park with a great family atmosphere. There were lots of people there, but you were still able to experience the outdoors and the beauty of the place without feeling like you just wanted to get away from all of these people (just image the feeling that you get when you are at a zoo).
The best part about the park though - it allows dogs! Harold was EXTREMELY happy about this piece of information. He just had to be on a 6 foot leash, which is perfect because that just happens to be the leash that we have for him - two actually, a KU one and a red one, to honor the KU crimson of course.
The minute that we got out of that car, it was like Harold realized that he had gone to doggie heaven. The nose worked the entire time that we were there. There are also a TON of rocks at the park and we learned that Harold not only likes to jump over rocks, but is a really good rock climber. He scaled some large rocks that I had trouble getting over.
I don't know if you can tell in the picture above, but on the overlook platforms there is a slight rock wall with a wooden handrail on top that goes around the perimeter. On all three overlooks, while the other dogs there sniffed the ground, Harold went up to the rock wall, put his front feet up so that he could look over the hand rail and see what everyone was looking at (with his nose going of course). After enjoying the view, as in the picture above, he would then do the dog stuff and sniff EVERYWHERE and jump over rocks and run through leaves.
All in all, all three of us had a great time. Sadly, it just made Monday that much harder.
